'Short Subjects': An Experiment

First a note of explanation.....

For over a year I have been sending out a 'Short Subjects' e-mail newsletter to family and a small number of close friends.  Gradually, this has come to include more and more graphics (some of them from Posterous postings).

Then I found Google Circles and a whole new source of material.  Also I found it was easier to share from one Google Circle to another than it was to share to an e-mail newsletter.  I started a limited Circle for my newsletter recipients.  However, many of these recipients are not willing to open Google accounts.

As I've become more comfortable with Google Circles and have acquired more followers (now 192), I've been posting more of the good stuff I find to my 'Public' circle, which is accessible to everyone who can find it.

The "Experiment #2" part of the short posting below was intended for my e-mail recipients who don't (or won't) have Google Circle (or Google+) accounts so that they can follow my 'Public' circle postings.

As I think about the implications of "Public" postings, I realize there's no reason not to share with my Posterous followers.  "Public" is, after all, public.  Hence, I've redirected what I sent out earlier so that it will be posted in my Posterous blog.  Anyone reading this is invited to visit my 'Public' Google posts.  If you like them and also have a Google Circles account, you're welcome to follow me and, if you let me know via comment somewhere, I'll be happy to follow you back.

The Beauty of Pollination

If you love nature films, if you love the 'micro' world (small creatures), if you love color, if you love slow-mo, then this is the video for you.

Experiment #1:  I've just embedded a hyperlink into the above photo.  If you click on the photo, it should take you to the video in your web browser.  Try it.

Experiment #2:  Although I've posted this in Google Circles to my 'Short Subjects' circle (which only you can see IF you've joined Google Circles), I've also posted it to a 'Public' circle which everyone can see (whether you have a Google Circles account or not (I think)).  Try this link and let me know if it works for you.   https://plus.google.com/106279627540580120308/posts

Most of the items I add to my 'Short Subjects' circle, I put there as a supplement to the Short Subjects e-mail, as when there might be 60 gorgeous photos -- which would overload your e-mail In-Box if I were to copy them all to here.  Other items I 'share' only to the online 'Short Subjects' circle because it's trivially easily to do so from another circle I'm visiting and not particularly easy to add to an e-mail.  Still other items are shared to the online circle because I see them at lunchtime at work and have no access to my e-mail account at home.  So all of those are in my online 'Short Subjects' circle which you can see only if you have a Google Circles (or Google Plus) account.

As I've been thinking about this, there's very little I put into 'Short Subjects' (e-mail or circle) that I wouldn't be willing to share with a wider audience.  I guess the inner Journalist within me is speaking now.  So I've been increasingly sharing to a 'Public' circle.  What is 'Public'?  I'm not sure.  It could mean 'available to everyone with a Google Circles account', whether I add them to my 'Short Subject' Circle or not.  Or 'Public' could mean 'available to everyone', period.  I.e., if you can find my account somehow, you can see my public postings, Google account or not.

So this is Experiment #2.  Click on my 'Public' link.  https://plus.google.com/106279627540580120308/posts   Send me some feedback!  Let me know if this works for you or not.

I find I'm not shy about sharing to the 'Public' circle, and I've been increasingly doing that.  My e-mail Short Subjects distribution grows very slowly.  It's still fewer than a dozen people whom I count as friends.  My 'Public' circle is seen by 192  people within the Circles world and by anyone else who can find it.  Frankly, the larger audience appeals to me.

Check out my 'Public' circle.  If you like it, add it to your browser's bookmarks and revisit it often.  If you already are in Google Circles, add me to a circle and let me know so that I can add you to my circle.

If these made you chuckle or smile, pass this on to someone who loves animals too.

And even if they are not animal people, send it anyway; these are too cute to keep to yourself.

If you don't pass it on a dog will come by and
pee on your computer.

Cliffhanger -- How Awesome Is This?

The bar is set higher and higher for awesome African game shots that we are privileged to see.!
Clinging on for dear life to the side of a vertical cliff,
the tiny lion cub cries out pitifully for help. His mother arrives at the edge of the precipice with three other lionesses and a male. The females start to clamber down together but turn back daunted by the sheer drop.
Eventually one single factor determines which of them will risk her life to save the youngster – motherly love.

The drama begins: The mother arrives at the edge of the cliff as her son cries out for rescue after being trapped when he slipped.

280b67

On the brink: Four lionesses look over the edge before aborting their rescue mission because of the sheer drop
Slowly, agonizingly, the big cat edges her way down towards her terrified son, using her powerful claws to grip the crumbling cliff side.
One slip from her and both animals could end up dead at the bottom of the ravine.

Minutes later, they arrive and she gives the frightened ub
a consoling lick on the head.

The dramatic rescue, captured by wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot, was played out in Kenya 's Masai Mara game reserve.

Despite the presence of wardens to avert dangers the cub learned the hard way.

280b86

Rescue mission: The mother inches her way down the cliff face to rescue the terrified cub before locking him in her jaws and making her way back up the cliff face.

280b96

Motherly love: The mother gives her son a lick to say that all is well in the pride following the drama

Clipmarks.com

Is it time to pronounce Clipmarks dead?  I think it is.

I visited Clipmarks tonight for the first time in weeks.  What have I found?  My many guides are disappearing.  Lost interest, I guess.

Graphics and photos are frequently represented by this:

 Youtube videos are being blocked.

Comments are increasing those of spammers.

All of this is symptomatic of a trend that has been going downhill for months.

Clipmarks is no longer worth the time.  When I want to share something, I will go to Posterous, to Twitter, to Google Circles, to any place other than Clipmarks.

R.I.P., Clipmarks.
